Las Vegas

The 2008 World Computer Bridge Championship will be held from July 20-25 at the Summer 2008 NABC in Las Vegas, NV.

Las Vegas time:

Over the years major bridge programs from all over the world have participated in the annual World Computer Bridge Championships. After its debut in 2000 Jack dominated the championship winning the title in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. In 2005 Jack won the Round Robin but lost the final to WBridge5, in 2007 it was WBridge5 again.

For the Championship seven programs will play a round robin. The programs meet in 32 board matches with a 30 VP international scale. The four top finishers will then play in a knockout format starting with a 64-deal semi-final.

2007 debutant TUT Bridge will not be taking part in this year's event. Long-time contestant Blue Chip Bridge will take part in the Individuals only.
In the experimental Individuals the programs face a whole new challenge when they have to team up with the other programs. In the Individuals all programs will use a convention card that is based on the Bridge Baron convention card.

The programs competing are:

Jack- Hans Kuijf / Wim Heemskerk, The Netherlands
Micro Bridge- Tomio and Yumiko Uchida, Japan
WBridge5- Yves Costel, France
Q-Plus Bridge- Hans Leber, Germany
Bridge Baron- George Yanakiev / Stephen Smith / Tom Throop jr. / Jason Rosenfeld, United States
Shark Bridge- Jonh Norris, Denmark
RoboBridge- Job Scheffers, The Netherlands
Blue Chip Bridge (Individuals only)- Ian Trackman / Mike Whittaker, United Kingdom

On this page we will keep you posted as the tournament progresses.

Day 4 - Experiment failed

Today the Individuals were played. 8 Robots (including Blue Chip Bridge) play a total of 112-boards (two sessions of seven 8-board rounds).
In the experimental Individuals the programs face a whole new challenge when they team up with the other programs. In the Individuals all programs will use a convention card that is based on the Bridge Baron convention card.

Not all programs were equally prepared for this experiment. Strange decisions were being made by programs that were ill-prepared leaving their teammates in despair. The matches showed a lot of wrong decisions being taken by the weaker, unprepared party having a lot of influence on the course of the game.
Not a good example of what computerbridge can be like.

Today the Team Championship concluded with the 64-board final.
After finishing far ahead of the field in the Round Robin, Jack suffered from bad decisions and bad luck in the finals. Again Jack saw the french WBridge5 take the title.
Congratulations, Yves! We'll be back...
